Overview

Occupying the midpoint between intuitive website builders such as Squarespace and more code-reliant platforms like WordPress, Webflow targets users who want to create a website or store that is beautifully designed while retaining technical control. Webflow offers one-of-a-kind features such as animation tools, a real-time editor, and a comprehensive content management system. Store owners can also make use of Webflow’s eCommerce features such as product management and email marketing tools to ensure that their online businesses always run smoothly.

On the flip side, Webflow has complicated pricing plans and learning to use the interface involves a steep learning curve. Despite the lack of live chat and phone support, Webflow nonetheless offers a vibrant community from which users can crowdsource solutions to their issues. Webflow also does not offer mobile apps, so users who enjoy working on the go should keep in this mind.

In this Webflow review, we will explore website builder features, pricing, ease of use, add-ons, and more.

What is Webflow?

Webflow is an all-in-one website builder focused on design and functionality while integrating CMS tools with eCommerce features. Founded with the “no-code” philosophy in mind, the creators of Webflow set out to develop a visual website-building platform that everyone could take advantage of, even if they do not have a background in web development.

The company’s mission is to empower everyone to create powerful, flexible websites and apps as easily as they create documents. Today, Webflow is used by over one million users, including companies such as Facebook, NASA, CBS, Twitter, and Dell.

Webflow Website Builder Features

With Webflow, users can create, develop, and maintain a professional-looking and responsive website or online store, without learning how to code or spending thousands of dollars on web developers. While Webflow’s WYSIWYG editor and SEO tools can be used to set up a website, its eCommerce features such as a customizable checkout cart and email marketing tools can help to create a polished online store and sell products. Webflow also boasts world-class templates aimed at helping users get started right away.

Webdesign Software

Webflow helps users create professional websites that speak for themselves. Webflow offers a combination of cutting-edge HTML, CSS, and Javascript elements, as well as scroll animations and design interactions to create visually stunning and dynamic websites. Users can make design changes with the Webflow Designer, while the Webflow CMS allows complete control over content structure and dynamically updates content. Users can also customize forms, set up a blog, and integrate Google Analytics for powerful web metrics.

How do other options score for webdesign software?

Webhosting

When a Webflow user creates a site on the platform, Webflow automatically hosts the website free of charge. Webflow also uses Tier 1 Content Delivery Network, Amazon Cloudfront, and Fastly to deliver content to users from the nearest servers, ensuring fast loading times.

To connect a custom domain, users need to add a site plan to their Webflow account. Purchasing a new domain name is also possible through Webflow.

WYSIWYG Editor

The Webflow Designer provides a real-time interface where users can build their site structures, tweak design elements, add content, interactions, animations, and custom code. Instead of manually editing a code snippet, Webflow allows web designers to click on a web element and drag and drop it into position.

Though Webflow does not require prior technical knowledge to set up and operate, users have the option to inject custom code for further customization. Additionally, Webflow only writes clean, W3C-compliant, semantic code that can be exported as a zip file for future use.

SEO Tools

Webflow encourages store owners to build SEO-friendly websites by giving them the option to add title tags, meta descriptions, and alt tags. It also automatically generates a XML sitemap for all websites and stores. In addition, users can add their websites to the Google Search Console for indexing and analyze site traffic using Google Analytics. Using 301 redirects, users can likewise permanently route traffic from an old path to a new URL.

Form Builder

Webflow’s form builder is entirely customizable and can handle most kinds of form submissions. Users can set up forms for newsletter signups or work inquiries from potential clients. It is also possible to configure success and error messages. Last but not least, Webflow’s Forms also integrates with MailChimp and Zapier to automate list-building.

Webflow’s strength lies in its extensive content management system. The Webflow CMS API enables users to add, update, or delete items right from the terminal. It also has a dozen field types, allowing users to add different content types and define structure in any way they prefer. Webflow also allows clients to be added as content editors so they can edit and update text while leaving the web design untouched.

Once a user uploads an image to Webflow, Webflow automatically creates responsive variants of that particular image. Users can also resize images and add special style properties such as drop shadow and filters to give them a special touch. Finally, Webflow also features a lightbox element, enabling users to display images or videos inside an immersive slideshow modal. Webflow recommends all images to be under 4MB and in JPEG, PNG, or SVG format.

Additionally, Webflow has over 100 responsive templates that cater to almost every kind of industry, from retail to healthcare and fitness. There are also premium templates that can be purchased.

When it comes to creating multilingual content, Webflow does not offer native multi-language websites and stores but does provide content localization via third-party integrations such as Localize and Localizer.co.

Blogging Tools

As with most website builders, Webflow features the capability to run a blog in tandem with an online store or showcasing a portfolio. Webflow also offers responsive blog templates that are code-free and customizable.

Webflow does not offer in-built website analytics for users. Instead, a third-party analytics tool such as Google Analytics has to be integrated. Viewing eCommerce-specific activity such as click and purchase rates also have to be achieved via Google Analytics.

eCommerce Software

Online stores built with Webflow stand out from the crowd with their spectacular 3D motion design transforms and custom interactions. Users can tweak the appearances of almost any element, from the homepage’s layout to cart positioning. Product and order management tools also allow business merchants to make sales and monitor stock levels in real-time while enabling payments in over 200+ countries.

How do other options score for ecommerce software?

Webflow lets store owners run sales and promotions on their websites through several ways. Owners can either update products with sales prices, display sales banners on promotional products, display original prices with a strikethrough, or display original prices only if a sale price has already been set.

While these strategies are effective for managing a sales campaign, they are not as comprehensive as other website builders that offer other promotional tactics such as a fixed dollar or fixed percentage off. However, business owners can still generate discount codes to be used by customers.

With Webflow’s product management features, users can not only add products and product details, but also create different product options and product variants. Each unique combination is treated as a singular product with its own product details and stock level.

Nonetheless, the amount of products that a Webflow user can upload to their site is limited by site plan. Users can add up to 500 items on a Standard plan, 1000 items on a Plus Plan, and 3000 items on an Advanced plan. It is important to note that Items include the total combined number of products, product variants, CMS items, and categories.

Checking and adjusting inventory is necessary for running a business. Webflow allows store owners to update inventory quantities and display “low quantity” and “out of stock” warnings. After a product has been purchased, the quantity field for that particular product automatically decreases.

After receiving an order, a store owner has to process and fulfill that order. Webflow allows owners to customize the design and labels of order emails in the Webflow Designer, and also provides the option to print out the shipping label. Once an order is shipped, there are fields for updating the shipping provider and tracking link so that the customer receives a timely shipping notification.

Business merchants can also issue refunds directly from the Editor’s Orders tab. Refunds typically take five to seven business days to process.

CRM features

Thanks to partnerships with global payment gateways, Webflow accepts payments from over 200+ countries via credit card, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. While users on the Standard eCommerce plans have to pay an additional 2% on every transaction, users on the other paid plans do not have to pay additional charges. Security and fraud protection are also powered by Stripe and PayPal.

Finally sales tax and VAT can be automatically calculated for regions like the U.S., Canada, EU, and Australia. These taxes are calculated by TaxJar. For countries located outside these zones, taxes will have to be calculated manually.

Webflow Pricing

Webflow’s pricing plans exist in three categories: Site plans, eCommerce plans, and Account plans. Users can always build a website for free on Webflow, but to publish their website and go live, a site plan must be added. To enable checkout on a Webflow site, users need to add an eCommerce plan. Finally, the Account plans unlock additional features such as code export, client billing, and project transfers.

Note that these pricing lists are simplified for the purposes of this Webflow review. For more information, visit the Webflow pricing page for further details.

Webflow Security

All Webflow websites and stores are issued with a SSL certificate, encrypting all connections to and from Webflow. Fraud protection and chargebacks are also handled by PayPal and Stripe.

Webflow has also aligned their security programs with the ISO 27001 and CIS Critical Security Controls standards. All Webflow employees have unique logins for all business critical systems and two-factor authentication is enforced whenever possible. Employees undergo regular security training to make sure they are up to date with the latest industry practices. Additionally, Webflow is hosted by AWS, so all physical locations of Webflow servers are always secured and monitored by surveillance.

Webflow is GDPR-compliant and customers can request to receive a copy of their data or have it completely erased by sending an email to Webflow’s customer support team.

Interface

For non-coders trying out a website builder for the first time, Webflow’s interface can be intimidating and involves a steep learning curve. Nonetheless, after a training period, the Webflow interface is easy to use and caters to both web developers and non-professional users.

The website’s live preview is located in the center, whereas the tools to toggle and tweak design are situated on the right. With a drag and drop system, users can manipulate the layout, spacing, and positioning of elements by moving them around the canvas. The Webflow Designer also features neat animation effects such as 2D and 3D transforms and element transitions, all designed to elevate a Webflow site and set it apart from the crowd.

For those willing to invest the effort, learning how to use Webflow can be rewarding as it unlocks special effects like parallax scrolling animations that other website builders do not offer.

Mobile Apps

Unfortunately, Webflow currently does not provide mobile apps for its users. Nonetheless, all of Webflow’s templates are fully responsive and mobile-friendly, and they scale well to all kinds of mobile device screen sizes.

Webflow Support

Webflow offers the following customer support channels to its users:

  • Knowledge base: Webflow’s help center, Webflow University, is a database that contains written and video tutorials, as well as FAQs and how-to guides.

  • Community forum: The Webflow Forum is a community-powered resource through which users can troubleshoot design and technical issues and obtain valuable feedback and solutions.

  • Direct support: Webflow does not offer phone nor live chat support to its users, but does provide email support Monday through Friday. All queries and issues are responded to within 24 to 48 business hours. Webflow also has an automated live chat bot aimed at helping users troubleshoot common questions.

Verdict

In the market of website builders, Webflow distinguishes itself from competitors with beautifully designed websites that are functional, dynamic, and engaging. It strikes the right balance between customizability and ease of use, all without sacrificing essential features and basic design principles. Equipped with a WYSIWYG editor, customizable forms, SEO tools, and eCommerce features such as order management and shopping cart functionalities, all Webflow users can build a powerful and flexible website or online store.

On the other hand, Webflow has a complicated pricing system that may take some time to understand. While web developers and web designers will have no problems adapting to Webflow’s interface, new users will need to invest some time into mastering the platform. At the end of the day, Webflow simplifies web creation and makes it accessible to all individuals, though it is worthwhile first to spend some time learning the website builder’s ins and outs.

FAQ

Webflow is free to start, so users can try out some of Webflow’s features and create a stunning website without paying a penny. However, if a user wants to publish the website, they will have to sign up for a Site plan which starts at $15 per month. For extra functionalities such as eCommerce features, users will need to add an eCommerce plan, billed at $42 per month.
